When designing linear LED lighting, engineers and buyers often ask: Can we customize the optical performance of a LED silicone diffuser – balancing light transmission (how bright) and diffusion (how well it hides individual LEDs)? The short answer is yes. As a silicone extrusion manufacturer with over 30 years of experience, Yutian Silicone can precisely tune the transmission/diffusion balance for your specific project.
Light transmission vs diffusion – two sides of the same coin
Light transmission (%) – the amount of light passing through the diffuser. Higher values give more lumens, but can make individual LED spots visible.
Diffusion (haze) – the ability to scatter light and hide the LED chip pattern. Higher haze eliminates spots but reduces transmission.
These two parameters are inversely related. The art is finding the perfect balance for your application – and that is exactly where our formulation expertise comes in.
How we fine‑tune light transmission & diffusion
At Yutian, every silicone cover and silicone tube for LED strip starts with a platinum‑cured compound. We adjust the following variables to achieve the required optical profile:
1. Silicone material formulation (most influential)
By changing the type and amount of diffusion additives (silica microspheres, titanium dioxide, etc.), we can continuously vary transmission from 92% (clear) down to 20% (heavy diffusion). Our standard diffused grade offers ~65% transmission with excellent spot‑hiding capability.
2. Wall thickness & geometry
Thicker walls increase light scattering but reduce transmission (roughly -5% to -8% per 0.5mm). We optimize thickness between 0.8mm and 4mm depending on your housing and light guide requirements.
3. Inner surface structure
We can add micro‑prisms, matte texture, or dots to the inner surface of the LED silicone diffuser. This improves diffusion with minimal transmission loss – a technique used in many of our side‑lit and curved profiles.
4. Color and surface finish
Clear (highest transmission), milky white (best all‑round diffusion), or custom Pantone colors. Surface can be glossy (for maximum transmission) or matte (for gentle light).
| Parameter | Adjustable range | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| Light transmission | 20% – 92% | 82‑92%: high‑efficiency display; 60‑70%: general linear lighting; 20‑40%: anti‑glare cove light |
| Haze (diffusion) | 10% – 95% | >90%: completely hide LEDs; 50‑70%: soft glow with slight chip visibility;<30%: clear protective sleeve |
| Wall thickness | 0.8mm – 4.0mm | Thin: flexible for curved install; thick: high opacity & protection |
| Surface finish | Glossy / Matte / Micro‑prism | Glossy: max lumen output; matte: smooth visual appearance |
???? Real customer case: balancing brightness and spot hiding
A European hotel lighting customer needed a LED silicone diffuser that eliminated all LED spots while keeping light output above 65%. Their original PVC prototype had spots at 80% transmission.
Our solution: We formulated a medium‑diffusion silicone compound, set wall thickness to 1.8mm, and added a micro‑matte inner surface. After 5 iterations, we delivered a silicone cover with 67% transmission and 92% haze – no spots, uniform light, and the customer placed a 2000m order. This case proves that light transmission and diffusion can be precisely engineered.
