Technical Guide · Curing Systems
Platinum-cured silicone tubing and peroxide-cured silicone tubing are the same family of material cured two different ways. Platinum cure is an addition reaction: a two-part compound crosslinks with a platinum catalyst and leaves no peroxide by-products. Peroxide cure is a free-radical reaction: heat breaks down an organic peroxide, and the volatile by-products are driven off in a post-cure. The cure system changes by-products, odor, transparency and process control — not the base polymer.

Silicone rubber arrives as an uncured compound: long polymer chains that need to be linked together before the part holds its shape. That linking step is vulcanization, and there are two common routes. Platinum cured silicone tubing uses a two-part compound — part A carrying the polymer and part B the crosslinker — plus a platinum catalyst. The chains join by addition, with no small molecule split off. Peroxide cured silicone tubing uses an organic peroxide that decomposes under heat and starts a free-radical reaction, linking the chains but also leaving fragments behind.
A buyer comparing platinum cured tubing with peroxide cured tubing is comparing two process routes, not two grades.
Those fragments are the practical difference. They are volatile, they can smell, and they are removed by a post-cure bake. How completely they are removed is a process question, not a property of the label. Silicone tubing curing is therefore something a supplier controls and documents; "platinum cured" on a drawing tells you the route, not how well the run was executed.
We use a two-part platinum cure for our braided silicone hose range. That is the compound the published specification describes, and it is the cure system behind the medical silicone tubing and food grade silicone tubing enquiries we quote most often.
Neither system is a grade in itself. Both can be formulated for medical or food contact, and both are used in industrial service. What changes is what the process leaves behind and how much control the process needs. The platinum route is also called addition cure silicone tubing.
| Point | Platinum (addition) | Peroxide (free-radical) |
|---|---|---|
| Cure chemistry | Platinum-catalyzed addition, two-part A/B | Heat-activated organic peroxide, free radicals |
| By-products | None from the cure reaction itself | Volatile fragments, removed by post-cure |
| Post-cure | Still used to stabilise properties, but not to remove cure fragments | Essential; completeness of the bake drives odor and volatiles |
| Odor and taste | Low; the usual choice where taste and smell matter | Can be noticeable if the post-cure is incomplete |
| Transparency | Can be formulated water-clear | Often more translucent or hazy, depending on compound |
| Process sensitivity | Sensitive to catalyst poisons such as sulfur, amines and some tin compounds | Less sensitive to those poisons, but heat history must be controlled |
| Typical emphasis | Medical, food contact, clear parts, low odor | General industrial and some food/medical compounds |
Both cure systems can be formulated to meet medical and food-contact requirements. What a buyer actually needs to know is whether the compound and the process were controlled for that use: the right ingredients, a post-cure that removes what it should, a cleanroom where required, and documentation that traces the batch. Cure type is one input to that, not a substitute for it.
For medical work we can supply cleanroom production, ISO 10993 biocompatibility reports — the three reports written in full as cytotoxicity, skin sensitization and skin irritation — and ISO 13485 according to customer requirements. For food contact, the relevant declarations depend on the market; tell us the destination and the intended contact and we will confirm what can be supplied. Our braided hose is not for human implant.
The useful question is not "platinum or peroxide?" in the abstract but "which compound, post-cured how, documented how?" A supplier who can answer that is more useful than a label. If your drawing already names a cure system, keep it in the enquiry — it tells us which compound family to quote.
Silicone tubing transparency is often the first thing a buyer inspects, and it is a poor proxy for cure quality on its own. Platinum-cured compounds can be made water-clear; peroxide-cured compounds are often more translucent, but filler and pigment can change either. Judge transparency against the drawing, not against a photograph.
Silicone tubing odor is a better signal. A faint smell on a peroxide-cured part usually means the post-cure was incomplete or the part was packed too soon. A platinum-cured part should be close to odorless. If smell matters for your application, ask for a sample from the production batch, not a display sample, and check it in the state you will receive it.
Send the duty, not just the part number. The enquiry that gets a fast, accurate quotation includes the application and the medium, the bore and wall or the drawing dimensions, the hardness, the color or transparency requirement, the temperature range, any pressure or vacuum duty, the cleaning or sterilisation route, the documentation you need and the annual quantity.
If you need platinum cured silicone tubing specifically, say so and say why — low odor, extractables control, transparency or a customer specification. If you need peroxide cured silicone tubing, send the drawing and we will confirm whether that cure system is available for the construction you want.
Is platinum-cured tubing always better than peroxide-cured tubing?
No. Peroxide cure is widely used and can be perfectly suitable for a given duty. Platinum cure is usually chosen where odor, taste, extractables or transparency matter, or where a customer specification names it. The compound and the process control decide the result, not the label alone.
Can you supply both cure systems?
Our braided silicone hose range is platinum-cured. If your drawing calls for a peroxide-cured compound, send it and we will confirm whether it is available for that construction; we would rather say no than substitute a different cure system silently.
Does the cure system change the temperature range?
For our braided hose the answer is no: the published range is −40 °C to +200 °C continuous, and the cure system is not what sets that limit. Formulation, construction and the duty decide service life; the cure route mainly affects by-products, odor and process control.
Which documents can you provide with a platinum-cured tube?
Depending on the order, we can supply the data sheet, a certificate of analysis, cleanroom production records, ISO 10993 biocompatibility reports — cytotoxicity, skin sensitization and skin irritation — and ISO 13485 according to customer requirements. Tell us at enquiry stage which documents the project needs, so they are planned into the batch.
What do you need to quote a platinum-cured tube?
The bore and wall or drawing, hardness, color or transparency requirement, medium, temperature, pressure or vacuum duty, cleaning route, documentation and quantity. Send those and we reply with the compound, the lead time — standard items 5–7 days, in-stock samples in 3 days, custom builds typically 10–20 working days — and the price basis.
Tell us the duty and, if the drawing names a cure system, keep it in the message. We will confirm the compound, the documentation and the lead time — and say so plainly if the cure system you asked for is not available for that construction.
